How to Revive That Rusty Shovel Sitting in Your Garage

Do you have an old shovel sitting in your garage that has a beat up wood handle and looks like it has been sitting there for a hundred years? Is it a sturdy, heavy duty shovel? Was it an expensive shovel back in its day? Has it just suffered the effects of neglect? All of us probably have a tool like this in our garage. There is a way to get it back into shape and provide you with several more years of service. Why spend buying a new shovel.

Cordless 18V Drill

Below are some steps to bring back your favorite shovel to prime condition.

Cordless 18V Drill

1. Wash the shovel down with water to remove all the caked on dirt.

2. You need to then remove all the rust. Take a wire brush or heavy grit sand paper and remove as mush rust as you can. It does not need to be perfect. Clamp you shovel into a vise to help keep it locked down.

3. Having a sharp tip will make the shovel easier to use. Put you shovel in a vise and take a file and remove the blunt edge on the end. You're not trying to make it razor sharp. Use a file to the shovel end or sharpen using a grinding wheel.

4. Use common household oil like 3-In-One oil and rub down all the metal on the shovel and let it sit and absorb into it. After some time, rub the excess off with a cloth.

5. Take some 120 or 150 grit sandpaper and sand down the handle. Buy some boiled linseed oil and apply several coats on the handle. Wipe off extra oil with a rag.

Of course, you can use this strategy on any tool in your garage. Do not throw away those old tools and buy new ones ever again.

The Forstner Drill Bit

The Forstner drill bit is a popular bit used by woodworkers when making furniture, creating inlays in veneer, and whenever an edge hole, overlapping holes, cross-grain hole, or boring at an angle (called a pocket hole) is required. These bits are also useful for quickly removing large amounts of material, referred to as "hogging."

Cordless 18V Drill

The Forstner drill bit was invented by Benjamin Forstner (1834-1897.) He was a gunsmith and was frustrated by the use of available drill bits when a smooth-sided hole with a flat bottom was required. His original design involved a round cylindrical cutting edge without any gaps. It was patented on September 24, 1874. Modern Forstner bits have split ring cutting edges in order to improve the removal of material during the drilling process. Typically, when using these bits, they need to be removed from the hole from time to time in order to remove the cut material from the hole.

Cordless 18V Drill

The key to understanding the usefulness and benefits of the Forstner drill bit lies in its shape. The bit consists of a center point, which centers the hole and guides the bit through the hole. The cylindrical cutters around the perimeter shear the wood fibers at the edge of the bore and help guide the bit into the material more precisely. The radial cut off edges on the bit plane of the material at the bottom of the hole. The results are a flat bottom hole precisely cut through the wood to the proper depth. The bit is not affected by the grain of the wood or by imperfections in the stock. Sawtooth Forstner bits are available. They cut faster but produce a more ragged hole. Since Forstner bits require greater force than other types of drill bits to move through the material being bored, they are typically used in drill presses.

An example of the value of using a Forstner bit comes when there is a need to join several lengths of wood in order to create a cabinet door. One method is to use dowels set into the edges of the planks. The Forstner bit is the bit of choice because it easily moves through the edge of the boards and leaves a flat-bottomed hole for the dowel to sit in.

Another example of the usefulness of Forstner bits is the installation of barrel hinges in cabinet doors. These hinges are installed in the edges of the door and cabinet frame and are completely invisible when the door is closed. Once again, the Forstner bit can best produce the precision hole necessary to complete this process successfully as its direction is not affected by the end grain of the wood.

Forstner bits are usually more expensive than other types of drill bits and can be found in most hardware stores, large home improvement stores, and online. Their usefulness in a variety of applications makes their higher cost acceptable. They come in a variety of sizes ranging from 1/4" to 4". They are usually found in sets and can be found with carbide tips. Carbide tipped drill bits are preferred as they keep their sharpness longer, cut into material more easily and generate less heat when in use.

How Knife Sharpening is Done by Experts

Far from the conventional bench stone, Knife sharpening is nowadays a skilled area. Though such forms do exist nowadays, you can get much more sophisticated equipment now for sharpening any type of cutting device or knife. The tool you choose depends on your personal liking and what you need to sharpen.

Grinding Wheels for Sharpening

Cordless 18V Drill

There are grains in grinding wheels, abrasive in nature, which help in sharpening the knives and cutting away all unevenness in the material. Wheels use abrasive materials of different types. The material that we come across in most wheels is aluminum oxide. A large variety of different oxides, are made use of for this purpose and are indicated by a number and a letter. For sharpening bronze, annealed iron, steel, and wrought iron Aluminum oxide is used.

A blend of zirconium oxide and aluminum makes Zirconia alumina. A combination of such proportions leads to a durable wheel apart from being great in sharpening materials made of alloys and steels. It is used very commonly almost next to aluminum oxide.

The latest material to be utilized for grinding wheels is Ceramic aluminum oxide. Being a sturdy material it is used whenever precision work is necessary. Ceramic aluminum oxide, at times, is blended with other abrasive materials. The blend normally changes according to the need and material that needs to be sharpened.

Wheels come in a gamut of shapes. The commonest form is the straight wheel. They have a front facing cutting edge. Another common shape is the cylinder wheel. In such wheels the front of the cylinder houses the cutting edge.

While choosing the right wheel, another factor to consider for the job is grit size. For example a lower number like twenty four or ten, means a wheel with a coarse grain. On the contrary a bigger number, say 180 or 100 is fine grain. These are used in finishing purposes since they can take away minute metallic pieces from the knife's edge.

Sharpening With A Bench Grinder

There are many who use Bench grinders for sharpening of knives, since they are a cheaper option. You can use these for sharpening lots of things like, knives, hand tools, drill bits, and cutters. The wheels are available in diameter sizes of 6 or 10 inches and can be mounted on a workbench. Normally the motor has a horsepower ranging from 1/3 to 1. In order to better the degree of sharpening accuracy and maintain the steadiness of the wheel, a good bench grinder uses a tool rest.

Sharpeners for Chain Saws

Do you have a chainsaw of your own? If you do, a chain saw sharpener is necessary. An easy option of sharpening a chainsaw is an automatic sharpener. When you lower the wheel the chain gets locked in place. The angle of the sharpener should be maintained and the tooth properly positioned; when finished the head should promptly be pulled up and the next tooth properly positioned. To make sure that the sharpening is uniform use automatic sharpeners.

Classic Motorcycles: The Honda VF1000R

Ever since 1969, when Honda introduced the CB750 and established themselves as serious players in the superbike market, Honda have been often leading the way in innovation. One of the niches they have dominated since 1983 is in the V4 engine niche.

Cordless 18V Drill

1983 saw the launch of the Honda VF750F. This was the machine that put Honda on the path of V4 ownership. At the time the engine was a revelation. A 90° liquid cooled V4 engine pushed out an astonishing 86 bhp which gave it the highest top end speed in its class but not only that, it had a remarkable mid range.

Cordless 18V Drill

The great thing about the VF750F was that it wasn't just the engine that was exciting. The bike had mono shock rear suspension and anti-dive front forks. A 16 inch front wheel and brakes that were considered to be amongst the best in the world were additional technical details which combined to make a fantastic overall package.

When the VF1000R was launched in 19 a four, Honda already had six models in the VF range ranging from 400 to 1000cc. The VF1000R was completely based on the VF750F but without any of the weaknesses of the 750.

The bike looked fantastic with its carbon fibre reinforced full fairing and Honda racing colours. With adjustable polished alloy handlebars and a perfectly streamlined rear seat hump, the look was one of controlled aggression.

41 mm air assisted front forks with adjustable damping and TRAC anti-dive, together with twin floating 285 mm front discs with four pot calipers gave the VF1000R an impressive front end. The full fairing and gave both significant protection from the elements for the rider, and also good stability.

The V4 engine proved a great success, giving as was expected huge amounts of torque, high top end speed at 150 mph and an ability to cruise all day at 100 miles an hour. At these sorts of speeds handling was good to but at 238kg it was not as sharp as some of its rivals at low speed, particularly the Kawasaki GPZ900R which was 24 kg lighter than the Honda and nearly £2000 cheaper to buy.

The VF1000R was a limited edition piece of exotica, which whilst technically advanced and sophisticated was still too heavy to fully complete in production racing. However, Honda had committed itself to the V4 format and whilst models to date had been close to being best in class but not quite there, further research and development would result, in 1988, in the RC30 which would sweep all before it.

Cordless Hammer Drill - Ryobi Cordless Drill

Cordless hammer drills are a must tool in any craftsman's or DIY enthusiasts' toolbox. The invention of the cordless drill and other cordless tools have made life much easier than lugging cables to and fro and are also much safer.

Cordless 18V Drill

Most cordless hammer drills are 18 volt and are very powerful to drill materials like steel, wood, masonry and any surface a mains electric drill would be used for. The ideal way to work would be to have two batteries so one is always charging while you are using the other. The hammer action is a must when drilling concrete or masonry.

Cordless 18V Drill

A cordless drill is quite suitable for drilling materials like wood, plastic and steel, but for a little more you would an all round drill in a cordless hammer drill. These drills can also be used as a power screw driver and with the reverse gear you are able to unscrew tight screws with ease. They come in 2 speeds and some have variable speed control also.

Powerful Ryobi hammer drills have a second handle attached to allow you grab the drill with both hands when drilling hard surfaces or when using large bits. These drills come with keyless chucks and capable of taking half inch or 13mm bits. One thing to remember if you want a hole half inch in diameter, begin with a small bit and use a several bits in between before using the half inch bit. This will prolong the life of your drill and is also a safe manner in which to work in.

Whether you use a powerful, cordless hammer drill or a mains electric drill the main requirement to drill holes especially in steel is a sharp bit; Bits for drilling steel lose their sharpness over time but can be sharpened on a grinding stone to their original state. One tip is to use some cooling liquid like oil or a mixture of oil and water; this will help to maintain the lifespan of the bits.

When using a drill make sure to wear safety goggles and do not have any loose clothing like long sleeves which could get wound around the bit and cause a serious accident. These cordless hammer drills are not toys and care should be taken when using them.
